Vergennes, VT

Our day sarted at 7 and at Lock 8. It opened at 8 and were the first ones through. Then, lock 9 (which was our first down lock), 11 (10 was never built and numbers were assigned, but never changed when 10 wasn't built), 12 (final lock for now).

We all like the down locks. They're so much faster! The canal reminds us of the Dismal Swamp in VA/NC.

Upon exiting the 12th lock, we entered southern Lake Champlain. I looked in my screenshots to clear them out and saw a post from June of last year of a boat doing the loop- Lake Champlain route- who took an hour detour up a river to a free dock in town in front of a waterfall. I told Ben about it just as we needed to turn off for the river. It was perfect timing. The entry was super shallow (2.5 ft!), but we weren't kicking up mud and didn't run aground. Proceeding through, the chanel got deeper and winding around we were around 10-20 feet deep. We pulled up to see the dock was a wall with metal poles on the side and the dock part from the posted picture wasn't there. So, we set up lots of fenders and tied up.

The waterfalls were amazing, and similar to the falls in Camden, Maine last summer, they were right in town. It was drizzling on and off, so we didn't get a chance to explore much.

Ben was craving pizza, so I consulted Google Maps (people were here for totality in April) and we walked about 1/2 mile into town, up a super steep hill. Rockers Pizza had 4.4 stars, so we went there. Got cheese, Hawaiian, and meat pizzas with cheesy bread. All of them were really good!! We took home 1 slice of meat and 2/3 of the cheese pizza in a small box.

3/5 of us wore a raincoat (not Ben or Bear) which was helpful because while we ate the rain really started coming down! By the time we got back to the boat, the pizza box was so soggy, I was surprised we didn't lose anything on the walk back! I was hoping we'd get to see the northern lights in this remote town, but it continued to rain into the night, so I never checked.

Vergennes, VT (First time in Vermont for all 5 of us.)
