Back in the USA at Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge, Michigan

We intended to leave around 7, but apparently the rocking made everyone sleep really well. It was closer to 8 when we got our acts together. Lori and Keith got the stern tie undone and we lifted anchor and were underway for a 6 hour journey to Harbor Island, in Michigan- our first stop back in the US, which is bittersweet.

Canada was surprisingly beautiful and relaxing, full of adventures, new foods, scenic beauty, history, and wonderfully kind people. Going into this trip, I have to admit, I was a little bummed that we wouldn't be visiting places similar to last year, but I was pleasantly surprised with our time in Canada and how much we all loved it! I can't wait to return. I'd even rent a LeBoat to do the Rideau again. Being back in the US means the Grasshoppers' trip is coming to an end, and so is our summer in just a few short weeks. We all can't help but feel a bit melancholy about it all.

Customs was a quick process on the tablet and all 9 of us were allowed back in US territory. This marks the first time the Grasshoppers have been on the Cartermaran in the United States! That's funny to think about, considering they've spent nearly 3 weeks on the boat, but it has been in 2 other countries!

We anchored in Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge, with a bunch of people in fishing boats and jetskis doing dangerous things. Already several times, we've thought, and sarcastically said, "Welcome back to America."

Ben checked the weather again for our crossing to Mackinac Island tomorrow and all looked favorable until about 2 pm, so we wanted to be sure to leave early to get there in time. He also figured if we show up early, we may be able to snag a slip from someone who canceled last minute OR get one of the 22 slips reserved day of that are available by VHF once you're beyond the breakwall. Fingers are crossed.

The kids fished, cross stitched, and relaxed- all of us with an overall somber mood.
