Alexander Passage to Bustard Islands, Ontario

It was a rainy start, but cleared up a bit while we were underway. Lori and I worked out and got breakfast together for everyone.

Soul Shine left the anchorage a little earlier than us, so we caught up to them and passed them. They average about 6.5 knots and we average about 7.5.

Everyone hung out and enjoyed each other's company while we were underway. Cousins. Sisters. Brothers-in-law. We anchored around 12:45 and stern tied in the Bustard Islands.

Keith, Lori, Sasha, Bear, and I all got in the tender and brought one end of a stern tie contraption with us, so Sasha, Lori, and Bear could hook a tow strap around a rock, connect it with a D-ring, then tie the stern line- with the other end on the stern cleat of the Cartermaran- in the D-ring. Keith rowed us over and I attempted to motor us back. (I need more practice on that. It's tricky cuz you point the motor the opposite way you want to go, which plays with your brain.)

As we were coming back on the tender, Soul Shine was pulling in. Yesterday, we talked about future plans, but didn't plan to stay together, so it was a fun surprise to see them and be their neighbors again!

The sun was out and shining. The boys were fishing. We blew up the SUP the Grasshoppers brought with them to explore our calm little cove.

At some point everyone decided to get in for a swim or take a ride on the SUP over to the rock. Everyone (except for Keith, Luke, and Bear) wound up jumping into the lake from the side of a rock, where we were stern tied.

It took me a while to build up the courage to jump with Lori. I knew it was super cold and I had to swim back to the boat while I was cold. I didn't like that. I finally did it and water shot up my nose when I went under and then I panicked about brain-eating amoeba.

On the swim back to the boat, I had pockets of warm water and cold water that freaked me out too- not knowing why it was happening like that or if it was from different creatures swimming near or under me.

It was funny how we were just talking to Susan and Bill yesterday about how crazy people are to swim in the cold water, yet here we are, all 9 of us playing in the water just after they arrive.

A loud clash of thunder made everyone hop out of the water and wait for 30 minutes before Roo and Moose decided to get back in.

We tendered around and it started raining, so we turned back. When it rains, it looks almost like a lot of rain falling onto an asphalt street. It makes the water look super shallow, despite it being super deep!

At the boat, we made dinner while it was raining and before we ate it, the kids called us out to see a double rainbow, over our beautiful islands.

After dinner, we decided to take the tender back out once more. It drizzled for a few minutes, then dried up. We explored the Bustard Islands for over an hour and a half, finding little inlets and bays to explore and navigating the shallow rocky waters when necessary, with oars instead of the engine.

We saw the other anchorage site, approached from the west and saw that Nauti Dog was, again, in the same area as us. Our anchorage was heading to the middle of the bustards from the east. We thought our anchorage was much nicer! Maybe it's because it was just us and Soul Shine there with the beautiful cove area all to ourselves or maybe it was the view of the rainbow over the nearby islands.

Early to bed- we were wiped out. This was my most favorite Canadian anchorage. Books and posts have said it keeps getting more beautiful with each subsequent stop, but that's hard to believe when today was just gorgeous!

  1. I think this was my most fave anchorage as far as views go. Every time I see pics of it it puts a smile on my face 💚. And the exploration on the Chicken was fun too. - Lori
